ARTIST STATEMENT
The artist dares again to break through her own creations freely opening up new possibilities for her art. — Milagros Bello, PhD, Deconstructing the Modern
I am a multidisciplinary visual artist and a cultural organizer, based in Miami. I create art to connect with experiences of place, personal memory, and dreams. My work explores the relationship between humanity and nature, between built environments and organic systems. I work in multiple media, including painting and collage, photography, poetry, sculptural assemblage, installation, video, and light.
Growing up in a military family meant constantly moving across borders, both within the U.S. and abroad. By my 20th birthday, I had lived in 16 homes. While this transient upbringing brought uncertainty about my identity, my sense of homeland and belonging, it also intensified my perspective. The influences formed a rich, textured tapestry resulting in a dynamic fusion of styles, techniques, symbols, patterns, textures, and nuances that now infuse every aspect of my work.
I create installations that are immersive, multi-dimensional theaters with space for visitors to wander and imagine beyond disciplines and beyond walls to discover new expressions of what a work of art can be, of what an art experience can do. As people navigate the space and engage with the diverse components, they will find their own journey crossing boundaries both real and imagined.
